5 Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is About to Break

Torsion springs do most of the heavy lifting on a residential garage door. Here are the early warning signs you should not ignore.

Garage door springs are under enormous tension and they do most of the work every time your door opens or closes. When they fail, it's usually sudden, loud, and inconvenient.

The good news is that a tired spring almost always gives you warning signs before it snaps. Catching these early can save you a same-day call-out and the cost of a stuck car.

Look out for: jerky or uneven movement, a loud bang from the garage, gaps in the coils when the door is closed, the door feeling unusually heavy when lifted by hand, or the opener straining and struggling to lift the panel.

If you see any of these, stop using the door and book a service. Springs should always be replaced in pairs to keep tension balanced, and the job needs the right winding bars and experience, so it's not a DIY repair.
